Ecological Agriculture

MALLORCA PROUCE

93.600€ awarded

Summary

Mallorca Produce seeks to drive the shift towards regenerative agroecology in Mallorca, transforming the island’s agricultural sector into a leading force for climate resilience and CO₂ reduction. The initiative emphasizes empowering farmers, promoting local organic products, enhancing soil health, and fostering biodiversity through regenerative practices tailored to Mallorca’s specific needs.

Challenges

Many farmers lack the specialized training and support needed for a successful shift to regenerative agriculture. Without appropriate guidance, this transition can become complex, resulting in frustration and a potential fallback to conventional practices. Additionally, there is insufficient monitoring to evaluate the effectiveness of these new techniques.

Goals

  • Increase the area of organic agriculture in Mallorca to over 25% of the Utilized Agricultural Area (UAA) by 2030.
  • Provide practical training, technical advice, and resources on regenerative methods.
  • Support the commercialization of local organic products and optimize resources through shared machinery.
  • Encourage the introduction of new crops and the revival of traditional crops to enhance biodiversity and resilience.

This comprehensive approach transforms Mallorca’s agriculture into a sustainability model that benefits both the environment and the local economy.

Activities

  1. Transition to Organic and Regenerative Agriculture: Promoting sustainable practices that enhance biodiversity and soil health, while facilitating carbon sequestration. Mallorca Preservation funds courses and provides advice on regenerative techniques, in collaboration with APAEMA for farmer and landowner training.
  2. EcoHub: Establishing a center for the collection and processing of organic products, featuring areas for logistics (cooperative Pagesos Ecològics) and processing services (APAEMA). This 14,000 m² farm promotes new crops and sustainable agriculture training.
  3. Sweet Acorn Holm Oaks: Developing a nursery of holm oaks grafted with sweet acorn varieties to promote biodiversity and adapt the agricultural landscape to climate change.
  4. Warning Stations: Installing stations that monitor soil and climate conditions to optimize water use and reduce crops’ water footprint.
  5. Mallorca en Fruit: Funding the planting of rain-fed fruit trees, essential for climate adaptation, improving water efficiency, carbon capture, and landscape revitalization.
  6. Nest Boxes in Olive Groves: Installing nest boxes for insectivorous birds and bats in olive groves to help reduce the use of pesticides.
  7. Shared Machinery: A project providing farmers with shared access to machinery necessary for implementing regenerative techniques, optimizing resources and cutting costs.
