The Evolution Mallorca International Film Festival (EMIFF) and the Mallorca Preservation Foundation have partnered to launch the inaugural environmental film series, “Conscious Cinema.” This series seeks to raise awareness about urgent environmental issues and to showcase the power of cinema as a tool for informing and mobilizing society on sustainability.
Problem
Our planet is grappling with critical environmental challenges, from oceanic noise pollution to climate change and the loss of ecosystems. Without increased awareness and education on these topics, society’s ability to act decisively and foster sustainable change is limited, hindering efforts to conserve natural resources.
Collaboration
“Conscious Cinema” is a collaboration between EMIFF and Mallorca Preservation, rooted in the shared belief that cinema is a powerful vehicle for raising awareness. This partnership brings the community of Mallorca an impactful program of screenings and discussions with environmental experts and filmmakers. Each documentary featured in this series connects with projects supported by Mallorca Preservation, strengthening the link between film, local initiatives, and environmental causes.
Goals
1. Raise Awareness: To increase community understanding of urgent environmental challenges through cinema.
2. Create a Reflective Space: To offer the public a platform to explore environmental issues and solutions.
3. Encourage Dialogue: To facilitate conversations between experts, filmmakers, and the public on topics such as marine noise pollution, ecosystem restoration, climate change, and heritage conservation.
4. Support Social Mobilization: To inspire audiences to commit to environmental protection through a deeper understanding of critical issues.
This series will showcase four documentaries, each followed by discussions led by experts, reinforcing the message and fostering societal commitment:
September 19 – Sonic Sea: Explores the issue of underwater noise pollution and its impact on marine life, particularly cetaceans. Post-screening, Dr. Txema Brotons, a specialist in cetaceans and marine acoustics and scientific director of Tursiops, will join as a speaker.
October 10 – Documentary on regenerative livestock farming’s role in ecosystem restoration and rural economy support, with a post-screening talk by Marga Adrover, veterinarian and project leader at APAEMA.
November 4 – As part of EMIFF, 2040 will be screened, a film offering practical environmental solutions and envisioning a hopeful future for the protagonist’s daughter in 2040. A discussion with Marga Melià, a Mallorcan filmmaker and environmental advocate, will follow.
November 13 – Pedra i Oli, a documentary on the heritage of dry-stone walls and olive groves in the Serra de Tramuntana, followed by a talk with Álex Dioscórides, the film’s director.
Four documentaries. Four powerful stories that inspired us to reflect on and connect with the challenges and marvels of our environment. Over 350 people joined us in this journey, and we’re excited to share a brief recap of what we’ve experienced together:
