Dear MAPF family,
On behalf of the Mallorca Preservation team, we want to express our heartfelt gratitude for being part of the inaugural edition of Conscious Cinema.
Four documentaries. Four powerful stories that inspired us to reflect on and connect with the challenges and marvels of our environment. Over 350 people joined us in this journey, and we’re excited to share a brief recap of what we’ve experienced together:
🎬 Screenings
1. Sonic Sea
👉 We delved into the impact of underwater noise on marine life, particularly cetaceans, and explored the vital work of the Cabrera Dolphin Project. Dr. Txema Brotons, a specialist in cetaceans and marine acoustics, shed light on how human activities disrupt marine ecosystems and offered actionable insights for their protection.
2. Ganado o desierto
👉 A compelling exploration of how sustainable livestock practices can regenerate ecosystems and revive rural economies. Guest speakers Magdalena Adrover, veterinarian and head of the Pasture+ project, and Xisco Llompart, producer of Me Ecològic, emphasized the significance of holistic livestock and land management.
3. 2040
👉 An uplifting and transformative vision of environmental solutions. Marga Melià , filmmaker and mother, shared her perspective on the challenges we face and the key questions posed throughout the documentary, leaving us inspired by the possibilities for change.
4. Pedra i Oli
👉 A poetic homage to the olive trees of the Serra de Tramuntana. Director Alex Dioscórides guided us through the historical and cultural ties of this iconic landscape. Complementing the film, Mary Lambourne’s traditional tunes highlighted the island’s rich heritage, and Luis Berbiela, vice-dean of the Association of Forestry Engineers of the Balearic Islands, stressed the importance of preserving traditional practices to safeguard this treasured landscape for future generations.
Each screening was also preceded by a special miniseries on artisanal fishing, created in collaboration with Save the Med. These short films celebrated the beauty and resilience of our coastal traditions while addressing the challenges they face.
đź’¬Post-Screening Conversations
The post-screening colloquiums became spaces of shared learning and meaningful dialogue. Questions, ideas, and a collaborative spirit emerged, proving that we all play a role in shaping a sustainable future.
The generosity of our speakers in sharing their knowledge and solutions has been pivotal to the success of this series. Their insights and optimism in the face of environmental challenges have truly inspired us.
