The Inter-Island Project "Weaving the Future" Tackles Plastic Pollution in Mallorca, Menorca, and Ibiza
The year-long project aims to address the issue through three main areas of action: scientific research, promotion of the circular economy, and public awareness.
A study to assess the impact of plastic on the Balearic seabed
One of the project’s key initiatives will be the investigation of waste found on the seabeds near the coasts of the islands. The study aims to better understand the presence, type, and abundance of plastics, as well as propose hypotheses about their origin. This work will be carried out in collaboration with the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO) and various local diving centers. The study will result in the creation of a database and a detailed report to support concrete actions to mitigate plastic pollution and to develop effective reduction strategies, contributing new scientific knowledge.
A circular economy network across the Balearic Islands
Inspired by the path of the fishing net reuse initiative "PescArt Menorca", driven by Menorca Preservation, the three foundations will explore the viability of creating a collaborative and circular network across the Balearic Islands. On one hand, they will identify different types of plastic waste with potential to be repurposed as raw materials, and on the other, encourage their reuse by collaborating with individuals, companies, and organizations interested in giving these materials a second life through artistic, artisanal, or other creative approaches. This process will culminate at the end of the year in Menorca with a gathering of the identified stakeholders from Mallorca, Ibiza, and Formentera, joining the network of artisans and artists from PescArt Menorca. During the event, they will share knowledge, experiences, and the challenges of working with recycled materials.
A magic show about the 7Rs
Environmental awareness will be another key pillar of the project, with a special focus on 5th and 6th-grade students. Through the children’s show “The Magic of Recycling”, created and led by IbizaPreservation, students across the four islands will receive an educational and inspiring message to promote the 7Rs of waste management (refuse, rethink, reduce, reuse, repair, recycle, and recover). This activity will be carried out in collaboration with schools and cultural spaces to ensure broad outreach and community participation.
With this new project, the participating foundations aim to consolidate a collaborative working model that can generate lasting impact on the conservation of the marine ecosystems across the four islands.
