The Evolution Mallorca International Film Festival (EMIFF) and the Mallorca Preservation Foundation have partnered to launch the inaugural environmental film series, titled Conscious Cinema. This series has a dual objective: to raise awareness about the environmental challenges facing our planet, while highlighting the role of cinema as a tool for advocacy and societal mobilization.
Conscious Cinema is more than just a series of screenings; it is a platform for discussion and reflection, designed to delve into the pressing issues threatening our planet. By using film as a powerful medium for education and social transformation, this series brings to the forefront the most urgent environmental challenges. Over the course of the series, four documentaries will be shown, addressing critical topics such as underwater noise pollution, ecosystem restoration through sustainable agricultural practices, innovative climate change solutions, and the preservation of cultural and natural landscapes.
The Environmental Film Series will feature four documentaries, all of which are closely linked to the work of Mallorca Preservation:• Sonic Sea, a documentary that examines the issue of underwater noise and its impact on marine life, especially cetaceans, will be screened on September 19. Following the screening, Dr. Txema Brotons, an expert in cetaceans and marine acoustics and the scientific director of Tursiops, will join as a guest speaker.
• On October 10, Ganado o Desierto, a documentary about using livestock to regenerate ecosystems and strengthen rural economies, will be shown. After the screening, Marga Adrover, a veterinarian and project manager at APAEMA, will speak.
• On November 4, as part of EMIFF, 2040 will be presented. This film offers practical solutions to environmental problems, imagining a hopeful future for the protagonist’s daughter in the year 2040. Afterward, Mallorcan filmmaker and environmental advocate Marga Melià will speak.
• Finally, on November 13, Pedra i Oli, a documentary about the dry-stone heritage and olive groves of the Serra de Tramuntana, will be screened. Director Álex Dioscórides will participate in a discussion following the film.
“For EMIFF, it is essential to support activities that promote environmental awareness. We are thrilled to feature part of the Conscious Cinema series at this year’s festival,” said Sandra Lipski, director of the Evolution Mallorca International Film Festival.
“We are excited to collaborate with EMIFF and address environmental issues relevant to Mallorca, helping to raise awareness about the importance of protecting our environment and ensuring a better island for future generations. In addition to the screenings, attendees will also have the opportunity to engage in discussions with the directors and experts, who will share their insights and experiences in these fields,” said Ana Riera, director of Mallorca Preservation.
