Summary

Environmental education is fundamental to promote ecological awareness and sustainable practices that protect and preserve the environment. Through environmental education, people, especially young people, are motivated to actively participate in solving environmental problems, promoting an engaged citizenry that is aware of the need to conserve natural resources for future generations. In a world facing challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution, environmental education becomes a crucial tool to achieve sustainable and equitable development.

The problem

Even though environmental education is such a powerful tool, the reality is that there are few opportunities for schools and their students to access environmental education activities. There are environmental education programmes carried out by a multitude of organisations, but few students take part in their activities, usually due to lack of resources.

Collaboration

This proposal will support the educational projects of several different organisations, such as Cleanwave and Palma Aquarium. Through these collaborations, a number of activities will be offered free of charge to educational centres with preferential attention. These educational centres require a special focus due to socioeconomic, cultural or geographical location factors, and therefore need more resources and specific measures to guarantee an inclusive and equitable education. In this way, a large number of students will be able to access environmental education activities that awaken their interest in the environment and that they would otherwise not be able to enjoy.

Objectives

  • Promote environmental education: Encourage greater environmental awareness and sustainable practices among students.
  • Contribute to the development of a committed citizenship: Involve young people in solving environmental problems, promoting their active participation and commitment to the conservation of natural resources.
  • Ensure equitable access to environmental education programmes: Facilitate free access to environmental education activities for students in vulnerable situations, overcoming economic and geographical barriers that normally limit their participation.
  • Reduce inequality in access to educational resources: Minimise the existing gap between students who have access to environmental education programmes and those who, due to economic or geographical limitations, cannot enjoy these opportunities.
  • Develop partnerships with specialised entities: Collaborate with organisations to offer quality educational activities aimed at raising awareness and learning about the environment.

Impact

During the academic year 2024-2025 a total of 20 workshops will be held with Cleanwave and 20 workshops with Palma Aquarium.

  • The scope of the environmental education programme will be a total of 1200 students: 600 students at primary level (between 5 and 12 years old) with the Cleanwave activities and 600 students at secondary level (between 12 and 16 years old) with the Palma Aquarium activity.
