CIRCULARITY UNCORKED: REWINE SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES IN THE WINE INDUSTRY

To further our goal of transforming the island into a model of sustainable management and bringing about long-term positive change, the Mallorca Preservation Foundation is promoting the ReWine Mallorca project. Led by Rezero, the project aims to establish a system for collecting, cleaning, and reusing wine bottles, which could revolutionize our production and consumption practices. This initiative has the potential to enable Mallorca to produce and consume up to 5 million wine bottles annually in a reusable format, thereby saving over 2 kg of CO2 per bottle reused.

To effectively implement a project aimed at transforming the production, distribution, and consumption chain, it is essential to approach it with dedication and a realistic perspective, taking into account the best solutions for our region. Building on this initial idea, a collaborative effort has been initiated with various stakeholders, including companies and representatives from the production sector such as Tianna Negre, Can Majoral, Can Feliu, Son Prim, Bodegas Ribas, Gallinas y Focas, Vins Nadal, Finca Ca’n Axartell, Mesquida Mora, DO Binissalem, DO Pla i Llevant, Vins de la Terra de Mallorca, and APAEMA. The project has also garnered support from the HORECA and hotel sector, including Esment, Ponderosa Beach, DoDo Pollença, Grup Riu, Garden Hotels, and the Xarxa Balear d’Hotels Sostenibles. Furthermore, PIMEM, Fundació Marilles, and the Consell de Mallorca are actively supporting the project.

“As the Director of Mallorca Preservation, I am thrilled to announce our participation in the Rewine project. This innovative initiative serves as an excellent example of how to promote the circular economy by encouraging the reuse of wine bottles. We firmly believe that this approach represents the future of glass packaging and consumption on the island. It is simply illogical to continue producing and discarding single-use bottles when there is a more sustainable and cost-effective alternative. We are enthusiastic about the positive impact that this project will have on our island and the environment as a whole.” – Ana Riera, Executive Director of MAPF.

ReWine offers an online platform to streamline project access, engage members, and generate donations to collectively establish the foundations. This critical project phase aims to create a roadmap that considers the unique characteristics of the region and builds a consensus proposal, paving the way for ReWine‘s imminent realization in Mallorca.
