Mallorca Produce

For the Mallorca Preservation Foundation, the soil is one of our most precious natural resources, a source of life and wealth. Therefore, we support local and sustainable agriculture, a key activity that not only defines our landscape, but also represents a great cultural and gastronomic value for our society and plays a leading role in sustainability issues.

Mallorca Produce project aims to support, from different angles, agriculture and local food production, trying to make possible that this important activity become an ally in Mallorca’s environment conservation and Climate Change mitigation.

SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE, LOCAL FOOD PRODUCTION AND CLIMATE CHANGE

Agriculture is the ONE sector that has the ability to transform from a net emitter of CO2 to a net sequester on CO2. Carbon can be stored long term (decades to centuries to more) beneficially in soils in a process called soil carbon sequestration, which is a process in which CO2 is removed from the atmosphere and stored in the soil carbon pool.

Conservative farming involves implementing practices that are known to improve the rate at which CO2 is removed from the atmosphere and converted to plant material and/or soil organic matter.

From the Mallorca Preservation Fund, we are aware that all these good practises should be realistic according to the land, climate, soil characteristics and place idiosyncrasies. One of the most recommended practices is the combination of pastures with trees, which is a very typical landscape of Mallorca.
